Let me put it like this!......Some exhibitions showcase art. The Smile Bro Exhibit showcased authentic creativity!

On June 5, 2026, Downtown Fayetteville became the backdrop for an evening rooted in joy, connection, and culture as hundreds of creatives, dreamers, artists, entrepreneurs, families, and community members gathered for the official opening of the Smile Bro Exhibit Curated by Al Bowman, in collaboration with Black Artist Forward. While the artwork was undoubtedly the centerpiece, what unfolded throughout the night became something much bigger than an art show. It clearly became a celebration of Black men and black male joy.

From the moment guests entered the space, the energy was perfect and the vibes were right. Smiles stretched across the room from north, east, south and west inside Region Six Project. Conversations sparked between strangers, friends reunited, new relationships were formed and music filled the atmosphere while guests moved through the exhibit, taking in each piece and the stories behind them. All of the art was definitely unique and fit the exhibit very well. There was a warmth present that couldn't be manufactured because you could feel it. The exhibit invited attendees to slow down and reflect on something we often take for granted, a smile. Something that the world needs to see more. Yet through the viewpoint of the artwork, that simple expression revealed layers of emotion, identity, resilience, confidence, vulnerability, and black boy joy.

Each art piece felt familiar.

Each smile told a story.

Each piece served as a reminder that some of the most powerful moments in life happen every day, often without us realizing it.

Throughout the evening, guests shared their interpretations of the artwork, exchanged personal stories, and connected over the emotions of each art piece. In an era where so much of our connection happens through screens, the Smile Bro Exhibit created space for something increasingly rare: genuine human interaction.

People weren't scrolling.

They were present.

Present with the art.

Present with one another.

Present with themselves.

I must say, one of the most beautiful moments of the night was witnessing how the exhibit resonated across generations and backgrounds. Different ages, different professions, different walks of life. Yet everyone connected through the same universal language, a smile. A reminder that joy is something we all understand.

The opening night also highlighted the incredible creative spirit that continues to thrive throughout Fayetteville. The city showed up to support the nationallly curated show with artist from right here in FAYNC and beyond. Fayetteville has always been rich with storytellers, visionaries, artists, and culture-builders, and the Smile Bro Exhibit served as another example of what happens when those voices are given space to be seen and celebrated.

As guests explored the installations, captured photos, and immersed themselves in the experience, there was a collective understanding that this was more than an event.

It was a moment.

A moment that reminded us to celebrate happiness.

A moment that reminded us to appreciate community.

A moment that reminded us that our stories matter.

Because when we smile, we connect.

When we smile, we heal.

When we smile, we remember who we are.

The Smile Bro Exhibit wasn't just about documenting smiles, it was about documenting humanity, culture, and the beauty found within our everyday lives. To every artist, volunteer, supporter, creative, and guest who walked through those doors, thank you for helping transform an exhibition into an experience.

If opening night proved anything, it's that Fayetteville's creative community is alive, thriving, and continuing to tell stories that deserve to be seen.

Let me say this publicly, Al Bowman and Black Artist Forward did something special with the Smile Bro Exhibit. This wasn't just an art exhibit, it was a cultural moment. A cultural shift in the ville, a beautiful reminder of what happens when creativity, purpose, and community come together. The impact was felt throughout Downtown Fayetteville and beyond, and the conversations sparked that night will continue long after the exhibit is gone. The Ville needed this. Salute to Al for creating something truly memorable.

And if you missed it?

Smile Bro Exhibit is still on display until July 5th at Region Six Art Project.
